My Favorite Sticky Buns Recipe

Gosh, nearly two months ago I was invited to a Rhodes Rolls blogger event where a bunch of us sassy ladies got together & dished while we learned about all the fun things we could do with their frozen bread. It was such a great time. I definitely learned a few new things about their dough: how to make a kaiser bun, how to make a flower sculpture & about Rhodes’s no fault policy – if their dough doesn’t work for you, they’ll gladly replace it for free! I have yet to make a kaiser bun, but I feel pretty awesome knowing that I can.

For me, Rhodes rolls reminds me of Sunday dinners, Christmas & birthdays. My mom started making sticky buns for Christmas (the most delicious dessert breakfast ever!) and now I make sticky buns for every birthday. They’re SO caramely & delicious. You’ve got to try it, if you haven’t yet! Here’s my mom’s recipe:

Sticky Buns

makes about 20 rolls (aka feeds 2 people ;))

  • 20 frozen rolls
  • 1 cube butter
  • 1/2 package butterscotch pudding mix (not instant)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • cinnamon, nutmeg & pecans

Spray bundt pan & drop in frozen rolls. Pour melted butter over rolls. Mix pudding, brown sugar, cinnamon & sprinkle over rolls. Sprinkle with pecans. Cover Loosely with foil, let stand 8 hours. Bake at 350º F for 25 minutes with foil on top. Remove foil & bake 5 more minutes. Let stand for about 5 minutes. Invert onto plate & serve.

Great giveaway! My husband’s birthday is at the end of October so his mom would always make him a pumpkin birthday cake. I’ve continued the tradition and he loves it! Thanks for the recipe – I’ll have to try those rolls out.

    2. We don’t have any birthday traditions! I generally don’t like cake too much, I’ve always like cream pies better! Well for first birthdays we make a small 6 inch cake and baby gets to eat it how they want!!

    3. Lauren says:

Fun! For birthdays we usually go out to dinner and then have homemade cake and ice cream — carrot cake for me and texas sheet cake for my husband.

    4. Jessica Mae says:

We always make French toast for breakfast. yummm! I also make the birthday boy or girl’s fav dinner and cake.

    5. Chatelaine B says:

tradition is always that the birthday boy/girl gets to pick dessert. So i’ve learned to make my husband a lemon meringue pie :)

    6. Rebel mel says:

I love birthdays! I always make an attempt to make my friends and family their absolute favorite cake ever. Along with that, I’ll try a new appetizer so were not just eating sweets.

My cake always ends up being chocolate, though.

      Oh, and, duh, wine ;)

    7. Erica says:

Every birthday my wonderful mom makes us whatever we want for dinner on the sunday around our birthday. I love this tradition.

    8. lisa says:

oh how I love rhodes rolls. on bdays we make a similar treat, but with marshmellows instead. yummmm.

    9. Shala says:

Our birthday tradition is that the birthday person gets to pick whatever meal they want and my mom will fix it! I usually pick lasagna but have been known to pick random things too (chop suey) :)

    10. Rachel says:

LOVE Rhodes rolls–they remind me of the same things as you…Sunday dinners, holidays, etc. For birthdays, we always let our kids pick what is for dinner–or where we are going for dinner. Then just a traditional birthday cake–always homemade, of course! :)

    11. Julia says:

We always make the favorite dish for birthdays. That means I always got spaghetti, and I’m thinking that is probably Phineas’s favorite, too!

    12. sharon says:

We do not have a birthday food tradition except using a red “You are Special Today Plate”. We usually fix whatever the birthday person requests.

    13. Libby says:

Strangely enough, this coffee cake is actually my family’s birthday tradition! Thanks for sharing!

    14. Megan Taylor says:

We have always had a laid back, family dinner for my birthday. It’s a summer birthday and growing up my friends were ALWAYS on vacation over my birthday for some reason (tear…) so it’s been just family ever since I can remember. My mom always makes some kind of “different” dessert… not a traditional birthday cake. Like one year she made an apple bundt cake. Random!

    15. Elle says:

In our family, the birthday person always picks their cake. Banana with caramel frosting has been a favorite for recent celebrations.

    16. My mom always let us pick what she’d make for our special birthday dinner. I usually chose Swiss Steak. I remember one year I had a nasty sinus infection but helped clean up for relatives to come over anyway, and I ended up not being to taste the steak anyway. Boo! :(

But now, I pick something less meaty. It’s not really my thing anymore. Oh, and she let us pick out a birthday cereal too. I always chose toaster strudels, which aren’t really cereal and which are really, really bad for you, but they sure tasted good.

    17. ElaineMicheline says:

My husband and I aren’t much of cake lovers..but he def. loves a good carrot cake. So as a tradition , ever since we moved in together in 2006 I have always made him a carrot cake on his birthday..he looks forward to it every year.

    18. Jenn Consentino says:

Our birthday tradition is to make the coolest cake we can find. I always like to push my limits and try new things!

    19. Emily Hale says:

If you consider eating whatever you want and feeling no remorse a tradition, than that, I suppose is my birthday tradition.

    20. Carina says:

I love Rhodes. They’re a family company and that’s important to me.

    21. Jennie says:

      Yum! What a fun giveaway.

Growing up, we weren’t allowed to have sweet cereals except for special occasions, and on our birthday we could pick any cereal we wanted. :)

    22. Jen R says:

When I was growing up, I was always able to choose what to eat on my birthday. Most years I picked sesame chicken w/broccoli, red peppers and rice for dinner, and Carvel ice cream cake for dessert. Thanks for the giveaway!

    23. I never really had a real food tradition for birthdays growing up, but I’d love to start a tradition with my own kids where they get to pick out any restaurant they want for dinner, and we take them. I just love to spoil my kids!

    24. Emily says:

Yummy! I am so hungry now.

    25. Tori says:

Happy Blog and real birthday this month…I turn 26 too, at the end of the month! I am a twin and so my birthday memory with sweets is that I never got my own cake until I got married! :) Silly but I like my cake!

Would love to win and make some ewwwwy gooey goodness!

    26. My family never had any real traditions for birthdays other than the fact that we always all try to get together. Many of our large family’s birthdays are close together so we are usually celebrating several birthdays at once. My husband and I do not have children yet so I am interested in starting some of our own traditions with our children when they come along.

    27. Whit says:

Ever since I can remember, we always got to pick out our meal for the day (usually dinner, but sometimes breakfast and dinner!).

    28. Emily says:

We make monkey bread using Rhodes loafs! (cut into teeny pieces=more sugary surface area!)

    29. Chelsea A says:

no real tradition for food except that the birthday boy or girl gets to choose what we have for dinner!

    30. Ciara says:

Funny enough, I always eat rolls on my birthday! They are my favorite food, and I’d choose them over chocolate any day!

    31. My dad makes those rolls for Christmas and sometimes conference mornings. They are so delicious!
For my birthday I always have a ice cream layered cake (there’s no cake in it, just ice cream.) It’s so yummy!

    32. Margaret says:

For birthdays we make ice cream cookie pie! Crushed Oreos blended with ice cream, frozen into an Oreo pie crust, and topped with… Oreos. It’s an Oreo bonanza!

    33. Laura says:

The birthday person gets to pick what ever dinner they want cooked, and then we have cake and ice cream after.

    34. Jessica says:

In my family we have a special birthday plate that the birthday boy/girl gets to use to eat their favorite meal!

    35. Deanna says:

We either eat out at favorite restaurants for birthdays or make a special homemade dinner. But, I always make the birthday boy or girl their favorite cake.

    36. I’m all about making cupcakes for birthdays! omydarlingblog(at)gmail(dot)com

    37. Heather HS says:

It’s the birthday person’s favorite… whatever they want. And I always make a cake. Even if you have dessert in a restaurant, there still has to be cake.

    38. Elaine says:

      Is cake a tradition??

    39. We have a macaroni and cheese tradition – we make the homemade version for lots of family occasions – big and small. Love it!!! Will try your sticky bun recipe. looks great!

    40. Dianne says:

Pineapple upside down cake! My whole family loves it, and while we don’t have it at all birthdays, we do at most, especially if everyone is together. I’m salivating just thinking about it. But everyone’s birthdays are in the summer! Maybe I’ll make some this weekend… Yum! ;D

    41. Emily says:

My mom makes custom holiday cookies for each holiday, so we can always count on her cut-out sugar cookies! She has over 100 cookie cutters so there’s never a holiday or even that goes unnoticed.

    42. Aynna says:

We always do cheesecakes for birthday cakes. It is seriously the best ever!

    43. Jen says:

I am trying really hard to make my own cakes for birthdays. (becuase I’ve always just bought them at the store) My cooking isnt all that lovely, but I sure do try to make my kids a special cake… even if right now it comes from a box! ;)

    44. Laura says:

This is wonderful! I’m always looking for new recipes for baking and this seems perfect for whipping out a last minute treat!

    45. Mandi C says:

A homemade birthday cake, and an over the top dinner or the birthday persons choosing. In high school it was always homemade chinese. :)

    46. Leisa L says:

I liked my husband’s families birthday tradition, they always had chocolate gravy, a Southern recipe. I have adapted the recipe to work for us. I try to make this for special occasions for my husband. Happy Birthday!!

    47. Tara says:

Chocolate cake with homemade caramel icing! Yum!

    48. Charise says:

We’re easy when it comes to birthdays… the birthday kid’s favorite dinner, and the fanciest cake with buttercream frosting that I can create (using my not so fancy cake-decorating skills!)

    49. Nicia says:

I’m not sure if we have a food tradition for birthdays necessarily, but we do have a special blue plate set that we get out and that’s what the birthday girl/boy uses for their dinner and stuff. p.s. I’ve made an orange roll recipe using Rhodes Rolls and it’s delicious!!!
