Welcome, Baby Felix!

Felix has stolen my heart & I’m sure I’ll never get it back. He’s been a joy to hold this last week, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the love & support of friends & family. We’re doing remarkably well; I’m slowly recovering, Penelope’s pulling all the stops to get as much attention as possible & Felix sleeps & eats all day (and most of the night).

I was so ready to have Felix, and so grateful that my doc pushed up the date for induction to last Wednesday night! Would you like to hear (read) all about it? If not, read no further & just scroll through the awesome pictures courtesy of the lovely Rachel Call. By the way, It was awesome having her take pictures of Felix’s arrival. Rachel was absolutely fabulous to work with. Her photos obviously speak for themselves. Check out her facebook page to see more pics of the birth. If I ever have another kid, we will have her take the birth photos again.

About a week before Felix arrived, I got an email from Rachel offering to take Felix’s birth photos. She’s just starting out a birth photography business, but her portfolio so far is incredible. I was so excited that she’d offer to take photos for us! With Penelope, Chris was so busy worrying about getting the right angles, that he was sort of separated from the experience.

Last Wednesday night, I was admitted into the hospital for a scheduled induction. As the nurse hooked me up to the monitors, she asked me if I could feel the contractions. NOPE. Sure enough, I was having little contractions about 10 or so minutes apart. She hooked me up to the antibiotics & we waited. After four hours she was able to get me hooked up to pitocin & start the labor process. I didn’t want to get the epidural right away because that would render me bed-ridden until Felix’s arrival, so I held off.

Every hour after 2am, the nurse would come in to check on my progress & ask me how I felt. She seemed to disbelieve that I truly didn’t feel any contractions for about 4 hours. I didn’t feel any of them! I only had some back pain. Finally, I was so annoyed with my back pain I asked for the epidural. Turns out that constant back pain I’ve been having for the last few weeks were contractions!

Once the doc broke my water, it was only a couple of hours until I started pushing. It didn’t take much to get Felix out, perhaps 30-45 minutes of pushing. I can’t describe to you the fear I had when Felix was passed to me without so much as a scream. He was entirely blue. I held him for maybe 15 seconds before the nurses took him away. It was a good 5 hours before I’d get to hold him again.

Turns out he inhaled meconium. The fact that the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck probably didn’t help his breathing situation, either. He had to be on assisted breathing for about 5 hours before his lungs were cleared out & he stopped wheasing. It was sort of heart-breaking to not have him in my arms right away. I missed him. I was grateful, though, that he was getting the help he needed. Thank you, modern medicine!

We’re just thrilled to have him in our family. It’s sort of surreal to be a mother of two, but I can’t imagine anything else.

I’m really excited to get back into the swing of things. I’ve got a lot of projects in the works that I’m hoping to complete & share soon. What projects are you working on? Anything fun? Share in the comments!

Barefoot & Pregnant

I’m pregnant!! WOO HOO!

I’ve wanted to share this news with the whole world for some time, but I didn’t feel like it was official until I heard the heart beat. Penelope & I listened to the heartbeat at the doc’s office on Tuesday, and all is going well! We are just thrilled. The crazy part is that I’m nearly 14 weeks along! I didn’t think I was that far along at all. Surprise!!

My belly is starting to grow now & I feel like I need to make the necessary arrangements for my upcoming giant belly. I’ve needed a full-sized apron for ages, but now that I’ll have a huge belly just asking for stains & spills; I finally made one.

I made sure my apron was high-waisted & pleated to add room for my growing body. We’ll see how well it fits when I’m 9 months & bursting at the seams. It didn’t take me much time at all to make it, so I made a matching apron for Penelope, too. I’ll post pics of her soon.

Here’s the breakdown of my pregnancy so far:

  • Morning sickness isn’t nearly as bad this time around as it was with Penelope.
  • I’m craving spaghetti, top ramen, pizza & a special brand of English muffins.
  • I’ve gained about 10 lbs so far.
  • I swear I’m having a boy, and we will be finding out in about 4-5 weeks.
  • I’m totally exhausted all the time.
  • I can’t eat sweets; the smell of marshmallows & Nutella makes me want to vomit.
  • Everything smells like mildew.
  • I’m due sometime in February, no exact due date yet.

So there you have it, the cat’s out of the bag!! Hope you have a good weekend! My weekend plans include taking a million naps & desperately try to catch up on all the sleep I lost in New York.

Thrifty & Chic: My Sister-in-Law

I hope you all had a great weekend! Mine started a little early on Friday morning at 3am when I woke up with the stomach flu. Penelope had had something a few days earlier, but she was up and running within minutes. I was flat on my back the entire day. So no blog posts, no iPhone case tutorial (yet!), just hours and hours of Gumby.

Thankfully, I got over the flu by Saturday morning; just in time to pack my bags and cart Penelope off to Phoenix for the next week. Penelope and I are having a fabulous time in sunny-but-not-too-hot Phoenix. It’s especially nice since the weather in Utah is schizophrenic. Yesterday I wore first pair of sandals I’ve worn in months! It was so nice to sport some springy clothes!

My sister-in-law, Shelley, wore such a fabulous outfit yesterday (as always), I’m featuring her for this week’s Thrifty & Chic column. Here’s the breakdown of what she wore:

  • headband: handmade, won at a church event
  • top: retro handmade
  • skirt: retro handmade
  • shoes: hand-me-downs from mom

Firstly, can you believe she’s a senior in high school? I just wish I had that kind of style savvy when I was in school. Shelley has confidence that all women would kill for. She’s super adventurous, always makes the most genius ensembles and has the best eye for vintage/retro goods. She’s so inspiring to me!

Secondly, the top and the skirt are handmade hand-me-downs from my mother-in-law, Linda. Aren’t they awesome? I know Linda made the skirt in high school, but I think that she made the skirt sometime in her twenties. Both items are very well constructed, you wouldn’t know it was handmade. Linda is awesome at sewing.

So, there you have it, a completely awesome outfit all for under $0 dollars. Amazing, right? What/who are your Thrifty & Chic inspirations?

Just a side note and a little shout out. . . I am so proud of this photo. SO PROUD. This is what came straight out of the camera! I made no corrections or adjustments, only cropping and resizing. Since taking Nicole’s photography class and reading her book, I’ve gone ALL manual. I’m shooting with manual white balance, exposure and aperture and LOVING IT!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It was a great week for me. I had a wonderful time with my in-laws cooking, eating and vegging. Here’s what we did on Thanksgiving:

Doesn’t that turkey make you salivate? It was delicious.

food overload. It looks like I’m 18 weeks along! I’m not.

I’ve been thinking on and off about the things and people that I’m grateful for and it’s boiled down to two lists. The silly things I’m grateful for and the sappy things I’m grateful for.

The silly things I’m grateful for:

  • An abundance of socks. Nice fuzzy socks and colorful tights. It’s been a childhood dream of mine to own comfortable socks.
  • Black Friday sales. I just got 50% off some amazing clothes at Tulle.
  • Sweet vintage chairs (more on that when I find my perfect table–Thanks Annie!)
  • The Yudu machine. Thanks Linda!
  • My wacom tablet.
  • My purple suede boots.

The sappy things I’m grateful for:

  • My husband, of course! Chris is the only one that fills that lonely void in my heart. He’s my other half. He makes me so, so happy. There’s no one in the entire universe that I trust more with my heart than him. He’s my perfect prince charming and he makes an excellent Mr. Mom.
  • My family. I’m grateful for all of my family members and for the support they’ve given me. I am also so grateful that Chris and I were able to start our own little family. I have loved Penelope from the very beginning. I feel really humbled that Penelope came into our lives as fast as she did. I know of so many couples struggling with fertility, and sometimes I feel a little undeserving to have such a beautiful and healthy child. I won’t take her for granted. I love Penelope so much.
  • My circumstances. I’m learning a TON from our current situation, and for that I’m thankful. I’ve gained more perspective, more confidence in my work and more love and appreciation for Chris and Penelope.
  • My church. I believe in God and I believe God is good. Very good. I’m thankful that my church has helped me figure that out.

Penelope is her mother’s daughter.

Now, this blog is more of an art, craft and design blog than anything, but Penelope is just WAY too stinking cute not to write a Penelope update. She loves dancing. LOVES dancing. She’s not like your typical 16 month old that may on occasion bob up and down when prompted to by first-time parents. She dances. She has songs that she likes, and she only dances for the songs she likes.

She has fabulous taste in music. Her current favorite (and mine, too) is Discovery’s So Insane. She dances to it using her repertoire of: twirling, booty shaking, shoulder shrugging and foot stomping. Wonder where she’s seen those moves? Maybe from a silly mom that likes to dance, maybe.

You might notice her chubby legs and fabulously large belly. I found an old ballet tutu from my first performance, Allison in Wonderland, and enthusiastically changed her into the outfit hoping that it would fit. It does. The same tutu I wore when I was 5. FIVE!

I couldn’t be more proud to see my little girl strutting her stuff in something that I thought was the cat’s pajamas when I was five. And maybe even still at 24.

Here I am at five, during a little photo shoot with my dad. I loved that costume. I think it had something to do with the feather in the hair and the ruffles on the top. The bright blue can’t be beat, either.
