Thrifty & Chic: Grandpa Sweaters

Ever since I found out I was having a boy, I’ve been on the look out for little handmade sweaters for Felix. My cousin-in-law has made a few for Felix, but can one ever have enough sweaters?!? No.

I don’t remember which DI I found this at, but I do remember squealing with delight upon finding it! Handmade sweaters are paI LOVE the color combination and the pattern on the edges. I’m almost 100% sure that this is handmade, there are no tags identifying that it’s not and you can see (if you look carefully) where the yarn starts & stops.

I scored this beauty for $2. Of course the baby was a little more than that. I love his smiley angry face. This little boy has me wrapped around his little fingers.

Have I mentioned that he’s a chunk? Yesterday I had to take Penelope to the doc’s office & we parked in the absolute worst place ever. I ended up carrying Felix in his carrier (nearly 30lbs combined) in one arm & Penelope (35 lbs) in the other for at least a quarter mile. Yeah, yeah, that’s notthat far, BUT I was in semi-uncomfortable wedges hauling 60lbs of kid through gravel! It was enough to get me swearing. I have arm bruises from Felix’s carrier to prove it.

SO, it’s been a while since we’ve done a Thrifty & Chic. What great deals have you scored lately? Please share (with links!) in the comments! ALSOif you’re lucky enough to be going to Sewing Summit in SLC this October, I’m heading up a special thrift shopping excursion for attendees. Come thrift shopping with me & score some sweet vintage/thrifty items from one-of-a-kind shops! Many of the stores we’ll be hitting up will be offering attendees exclusive discounts. HOT. You going?!?

Thrifty & Chic: A New Headboard

I was sad to see our old headboard go, but it just didn’t fit our new place. I knew it’d be nearly impossible to find another headboard similar & for $8 (I know, it was a major steal), but I kept my eyes peeled anyway. I didn’t end up with an upholstered headboard, but I am happy with what I did find.

We also replaced our bedding. I love the rusty orange color of this quilt, but truly Chris & I can’t stand it. It’s scratchy & catches on even the softest of skin. I can’t rub my hands along the quilt without cringing. It’s like nails on a chalkboard. So now I’m patiently awaiting the arrival of this beauty (discovered via AnnilyGreen).

Apparently the couple I bought this headboard from had just refinished it, but then updated their home & bought new furniture to match. It’s a gorgeous hard wood headboard in perfect condition. I got it for $40! I’m extremely happy with it. The projector part of me wants to get some leather & make an upholstered insert. I don’t imagine it would be too difficult to attach something like that, but I probably won’t get around to doing that project for some time. As it is, I have yet to stain our new dresser, stain our new music stool or add the finishing touches to our handmade table.

One project at a time, Melissa. ONE project at a time.

On another note, Penelope thinks she’s invisible with her blanket over her head. Right after I bought this headboard (a few weeks ago) she was supposed to be napping in her room, but instead wandered the house with the blanket atop her head. She was supposed to get a time out for wandering out of her room during nap-time/quiet-time, but I was a softie. I thought she was being too cute for a time out.

Thrifty & Chic: Jeggings

I think it’s safe to say that the item of clothing currently known as jeggings have sprouted a somewhat controversial conversation in the fashion-sphere. Are they really passable as pants? Are they even flattering? My sister-in-law wrote a little ditty about leggings vs. stretch pants. It’s hilarious. You could easily insert jeggings in there.

Here’s my opinion on the matter. Jeggings are the best thing since sliced bread. Now maybe they’re on their way out, but they sure have saved my maternity wardrobe. I don’t know what I’d do without them! See, the one pair of maternity jeans that I own don’t have any stretch to them. NONE. They haven’t fit since month 3 of this pregnancy. This makes absolute zero sense, since as all women who have been pregnant know you grow about 5 sizes during the day because of water retention. Your pants should surely accomodate. No?

I’ve found a few great sources for jeggings & I wanted to share them with you. My absolute favorite jeggings are from H&M. I found them in the little girl’s department for somewhere around $15. They’re like wearing pajamas, they’re so comfortable. Last time I went, they still had plenty of styles of jeggings in the women’s department, too. All under $20.

My other favorite pair of jeggings are from. . . wait for it. . . Walmart! Walmart, to me at least, doesn’t necessarily scream fashion, but I found the best pair of jeggings there for $12. They’re a lot thicker than the jeggings you’d find at most stores and they have back pockets, which look more like regular jeans & not tights. I’ve turned some of my friends (who’ve been hesitant to try skinny jeans) to these pants & all of them have cheered for joy. They’re LEI brand. Go get a pair now if they’re still in stock.

So, do you think jeggings should die a slow & painful death or are you on the bandwagon?

Thrifty & Chic: Green Rain Boots

Penelope is going to grow up to be an amazing thrift shopper. I just know it!

Back in April (Penelope’s birthday, in fact) we were running some errands when I randomly decided to pop into D.I. to look for some sweet deals. I passed by the kid’s shoe section & Penelope picked snagged a pair of rain boots that I (surprisingly) didn’t notice.

She promptly kicked off her shoes & threw the boots on. At first I wasn’t too thrilled about these mysterious rain boots, but Penelope wasn’t going to take them off, so I bought them. I’d much rather spend $1 on a pair of boots than deal with a screaming 2 year old. Just trying to keep the peace.

As my sister pointed out to us after a night of babysitting, Penelope’s favorite cartoon character, Kipper, sports the same green rain boots in a rainy day episode. Aw! How sweet. Penelope & Kipper are all matchy-matchy!

Penelope would wear her boots everyday if I let her and she gets compliments on her sweet boots everywhere we go. I love that she’s gotten so much use out of a measly little dollar.
