A Little Bleach & Packing Tape

I just have to tell you I have the coolest in-laws. Really. Reeeally. My sister-in-law is fantastic. She speaks fluent Cantonese from living in China for a year and a half. She’s getting her masters in Engineering. She throws a serious dance party. She has excellent taste in music and it was her birthday last week.

While lurking the “Sale” section at Urban Outfitters I came across a radical black men’s tee that had bleached spotted stripes. Sadly it didn’t fit Chris or me, so I logged the idea in the back parts of my brain to use at a later date. The later date ended up being (surprisingly) a few days later when I was thinking of what to make for Lindsay’s birthday.

I got a basic shirt from you-know-where and revamped it using a little bit of bleach and a lot a bit of packing tape. It was super simple. I just laid the shirt flat on some cement, taped stripes down, mixed 1 part bleach 1 part water and flicked at the shirt with a brush like a crazy lady. I was smart and wore junky clothes and took great care to dispose of the packing tape without getting any stray bleach on me. After I bleached up both sides of the shirt I threw it in the wash (with rags as to not waste water and not ruin any other clothes). I would’ve been done at that point, but I had to add a little flair on the side. If you asked me how I did it, the only terms you’d hear are “scrunch this”, “squish that” and sew.

My biggest fear was that I creating a heaping, bleached mess, but it worked! I’m disappointed that I didn’t think ahead and make two while I was at it. I think it looks pretty snazzy.

Father’s Day is Just around the Corner. . .

A friend of mine (inspired by this post) asked me if I could make a book for her husband if she gathered quotes and blurbs from family and friends about him. Of course I was thrilled to do it!! I really love the idea of getting family and friends to say nice things about your husband and binding it in book form for a gift. Seriously it’s genius. You know. . . father’s day is around the corner, and I did bring my bookbinding supplies with me to Arizona, so send me an email if you want one made for the man in your life. Or woman. Heck, I wouldn’t mind it if someone did that for me!

Ed's Cork book

I’m so happy with how it turned out. I really wish you could touch your computer screens and truly feel how yummy the cork and leather combination is. I LOVE CORK. I LOVE CORK! It’s just deliciously soft.

Petal Box Download + Mother’s Day Thoughts

My current mantra is “Better late than never. Better late than never.” It took me over two weeks to get in touch with my sister to wish her a happy birthday, and my mom won’t be getting her Mother’s day gift for another couple of days because the post office isn’t open on Saturdays.

I really want to share with you what I did for my mom for Mother’s day/Birthday (they’re often the same day). My mom is really special. She has worked really REALLY hard at doing everything. When I say everything, I mean it. I hope that she knows that her efforts don’t go unnoticed. So for Mother’s day, I thought it would be fitting to give her the gift of memory. I hand wrote random memories that I have of my mom and the thoughtful things she has done for me. I think the next time I do it, I should start a year in advance, because I know I’ve only hit the tip of the iceberg.

Mom's Petal Box

I cut out a bunch of 3″x3″ squares and hand wrote (with pen & ink) my memories. Then I packaged it all with a box version of the petal envelope. I made up the template and want to share it with you! The box template is 3″ x 3″ x 1″, super fast to make and perfect for packaging jewelry and other sweet little gifts.

My friend compiled a book of sweet notes and tributes from friends and family for her husband’s birthday. She had me bind it. I just wish I thought of this idea when I failed miserably for Chris’s birthday. I’m happy to have such thoughtful, creative friends.

I love the manly fleur-de-lis/leather combo.

Handmade Christmas II

Em, Marc, if you haven’t opened your presents yet, READ NO FURTHER!!

[SPOILER ALERT]

My brother-in-law is a huge Steelers fan, and when I saw him wearing my sister’s apron for grilling, I thought he could use his own, manly, butcher-style apron. Hope it’s the right size.

Emily said she wanted something that was fun that she could use everyday, so I made her a reusable grocery bag big enough to hold a gallon of milk, loaf of bread, eggs, cheese and some fruits and veggies. I also made her this lovely hair clip. It looks awkward on me because my hair is short; Emily has longer, pretty hair that she knows how to do very well.

I made Ayden this awesome winter hat which is just so fuzzy and soft, hopefully he’ll be able to keep it on his head for his wintery walks with GG. It sure looked cute on Penelope. She kind of looks like a boy in this picture. A little.

I was pretty sneaky with this one. My dad had mentioned the idea of buying her a new ipod, since her old one holds its charge for 20 minutes (sorry mom), so I made her the case. Simple, but useful.

I think [not sure] that Linda suggested I make recipe cards for her for Christmas. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out, except the fact that they’re not letterpressed [not enough time]. The printing still turned out great. Want these recipe cards for yourself? Download the pdf here. I also gave her the gift of blogging. An Esplin family blog.

Christmas was wonderful and I was truly spoiled. Hope you had a great one, too.

If you’d like a tutorial on any of these things let me know, comment or email.
