Cashmere Mitten Pattern for Grown Ups

I finally found my mittens as soon as I stopped looking for them. Typical right? Also, Penelope didn’t hide them from me. I hid them from me, putting them in a new place that I thought would be so much easier for me to find. Typical mom-brain. I love it.

If you’d like to make your own mittens, click the link below to download the pattern! Enjoy!

These are so perfect!!! I have been looking and looking for something like this!! I am making them tomorrow!

    7. This is perfect! My sister handed me her cashmere sweater a few weeks ago. It’s got a few holes in it and she wanted me to make it into something else. I’m thinking a cowl and some gloves! Thanks!

Love these! Made them for my friends baby when you posted the pattern for the toddler size.

I was so excited to make these that I took one of my favorite sweaters and did just that! Problem was, the mittens were very tight. I downloaded the pattern and sewed with maybe a 1/4″ seam but there were snug. Are these made to fit an adult? I think I have average size hands(not big and not small. Please advise on how to make the pattern a touch larger. Thanks

@Jen – I’m so sorry that they were too snug! When you printed the pattern, were your printer settings at “fit to page”? That can scale the pattern down by more than 10%.

If that’s not the issue. . . depending on the technology you have at your disposal, you could expand the pattern via illustrator or do it by hand.

By hand, you’d print out the pattern, set down your hand & adjust with a pen or pencil where they were snug. If they were a bit too narrow, but the correct length, just widen the sides a bit. You’ll want to take the material thickness into consideration. If you’re using a really thick felt/sweater, you’ll want to expand the pattern or reduce your seam allowances a touch.

      I sure hope that helps!

The pictures shows the mittens to be longer (almost to the elbow), but your pattern doesn’t appear to show this. I am a little confused.

Well, gee,,, I just picked up a red cashmere sweater ($4) from my local Athens, Texas Goodwill resale center. I was going to fashion it into a pillow, but these are soooo cute.

Hi there! Do I have to felt the sweater before I make these? Is there a reason for that? Doesn’t it shrink and make it less fabric to use? Also, do you need to “hem” the ends of the gloves?…will the material ravel? I’ve never cut a sweater before! Thank you!

      • Melissa says:

By felting the sweater, it allows you to have warmer mittens and no need to hem! The act of shrinking everything keeps it from unraveling. It’s magic!
