A Nice New Tat

Over the weekend I got a tattoo.

Just kidding. I’ve always wanted one, though! In church we talked about respecting & taking care of our bodies so I sent all the little kiddos (I teach about 30 kids once a month) home with their very own temporary tattoo as a fun reminder. The kids LOVED it. SCORE!

I designed this little tat using Tattoo ink font & my own hand-lettering. It was super fun & didn’t take nearly as long to print & finish as I thought it would. This paper is some super fun stuff. I love temporary tattoos!

Speaking of which, you familiar with Tattly? It’s a rad online store full of some killer designerly temporary tattoos. The Tantone one kills me. So does the Type Nerd one.

Click the link below to download my design! Hope someone else gets a kick out of it as much as I did.

This tutorial/freebie is free for personal use and should not be distributed/republished without my consent. Altering the file NOT ALLOWED. If you would like to use this tutorial for commercial purposes, please email me. Thanks!

Oh I love it! I taught Sharing Time yesterday and that would’ve been a great little favor for the kids. I’ll keep it in mind in case I ever teach that lesson again!

  2. Heather says:

Oh my, I wonder if any parents freaked out about those! My dear SIL is a nut who won’t even let her kids wear temporary tattoos, probably because she thinks they’ll get a taste for them and get all tatted up when they get older! :) Yet face painting is fine…go figure.

I wish I could write like you! Your handwriting is divine!

I lurv it! This is such a great idea for birthday party favors. Definitely bookmarking this one!

That is so fun. I love the juxtaposition of the tattoo concept and the phrase. Very clever and SO CUTE!

    Oh the irony! :)

I really love it. Always wanted a tat myself. My former coworker got some beautiful work done on her shoulder recently. All us designers were ooohing and ahhhing over it. Guess henna and temporary will have to do.

  7. What a fun idea! My niece is really into temporary tattoos…I’ll have to make her some for Christmas or her birthday! Xo, Katie

Oh my gosh, I’m going to do this for my activty day girls sometime soon and they are going to love it! Thanks Melissa!

  9. Jessica says:

I don’t even have kids yet and this idea of yours boiled my blood a bit.

A birthday party? Sure. Church? Nope.

    I love this!! So ironic!
I saw a thing the other day on Ohdeedoh where they used custom tattoos to print “If lost, call ###-###-####” on temporary tattoos for when you take kids to large public places or events. They put it on the inside of their arm or on the kids’ tummy so it wasn’t clearly visible, but if they got lost, they could show security and they had the cell phone number to call. Brilliant, right?
Personally, we use temporary tattoos all the time at our house. I have 2 real ones so Jack gets temporary ones to be more like Mommy or Daddy (he’s got ink, too).

Hilarious! I am orderinfg the paper and thanks for the download…it’s wonderful!

  12. Sandra says:

That is awesome! I love your writing! I do have a few tattoos, but I love them, so I figure it’s okay. All though, I dont think I will be getting more in the future. Enough is enough :)
Love the temp. tats for the kids, what a swell idea!

  13. Liz says:

    SO neat Melissa!

  14. Suzanne says:

can you use a regular inkjet printer on that paper and then just cut them out by hand if you don’t have a silhouette?

  15. Erin says:

oooh, i bet there were a few unhappy parents in the ward. i am amazed that you are able to hand letter things and they come out so perfect. i can’t TRACE as nice as you scribble!

Oh I wish I had thought of that for my little primary classes or achievement day girls!!! Brilliant idea and so ironic! LOVE

  21. cailean says:

Do you mind letting me know what brand watch you’re wearing? I love it!

  22. Alyssa says:

That’s horrifying and sacreligious. Were you trying to mock the principle? That is the opposite of a reminder about holy bodies. MAYBE for a part if it said something else, but certainly not from a primary teacher. Like I said- horrifying.

  23. Jamie says:

ugh. not sure what to say, except for the fact that I had to say something. i agree with what was said about it being opposite of what its reminding us of — you would’nt put “temporary” graffiti on the temple to show the temple is a sacred place. totally do not agree with this…. It just doesn’t make sense.

  24. ashley says:

Wow. If I was a parent of a child that came home with that, I would be a little upset. Really? Teach them NOT to get tattoos, then GIVE them a tattoo? That’s extremely contradictory. No, it wasn’t a real tattoo that you gave, but the message is very confusing for the kids: “Tattoos aren’t good because our body is a Temple. Kids, now here’s your fun tattoo!!” So if you were teaching them that smoking is bad for our bodies, would you hand out those candy cigs that look real?? Wierd and disturbing. I can think of better “handouts” you could’ve sent home that would teach the message in a more tasteful way.
