Handmade: Floral Peter Pan Top

I’ve had this floral fabric since last year. I’ve been hoarding it for the perfect project, which presented itself last weekend. I have a bunch of Megan Nielsen’s patterns from designing her branding, so I had my cousin and my sister-in-law come over to sew some with me. My cousin made the ruched top (two-toned idea taken from liz) and I started working on the Banksia top.

I didn’t do the button placket on mine, I’m too lazy for buttons. Instead I made the peter pan collar reach all the way around the neckline.

I also added a high-low hemline and shortened the sleeves.

I really like this fabric, it’s light-weight and it’s a fantastic print. I wanted to make sure that I did this pattern correctly, so I followed all the instructions (to a T – which I never do), and took my time with everything. In the end it was so worth it.

Rushing = the difference between handmade and ‘homemade’. I finished all of my edges with a rolled hem. So easy (now that I’ve got the hang of it) and so professional.

This new top is now going to be in tight rotation this summer! Here I’m layering it with a dress I made last year

Outfit details:

  • top: handmade
  • dress: handmade
  • belt: thrifted
  • bracelets: gift
  • watch: c/o Soft Watch
  • shoes: Forever 21

Looks great! Is that your wedding ring that I’ve never noticed before? LOVE it.

I think it’s hard to get mismatched patterns to “match”, but this combo of the floral top and the check/plaid skirt looks marvelous. Perhaps the orange pulls them together. Whatever the catalyst, the pairing pops.

    5. I LURVE this. All the little extra touches and finishes really make it. Would love some tips on how you did the sleeves / low back hem!

    6. Everytime I read your blog I want to try making something for myself but then I’m not sure I can pull it off and decide to stick safely with my wierd thrifted old lady comfort clothes….but your shirt is awesome…I wish I would have made it…

Thanks for your comment, Cirque Du Bebe!

I just did a rolled hem, using this video as a guide:

Since the fabric was a bit slippery, I ironed all of the edges with starch before hand.

Liz shows an easy way to do a high-low hemline here:

      Hope that helps!

    9. So cute, love that print!

I didn’t realize you did Megan’s pattern design but OF COURSE you did–they are soooo cute and I can see how they have a similar vibe to your blog design! I am testing a pattern for her and everything is so cute and fun, really makes the pattern line stand out in a great way!
